Player: Chimezie Offurum
School: Georgetown Prep
Athleticism: "Mezie” pretty much has the whole athletic package. He runs the court well, can play over the rim, has a well-developed physique, and has solid quickness.
Shooting: Offurum only took 8-9 shots, but knocked down a couple of three-balls, and looked very comfortable behind the arc. He combined that with two nasty dunks, demonstrating that he knows how to finish around the rim.
Ball-handling: He got picked a couple of times when using his off (left) hand, but overall looks to be able to handle well enough to create his own offense.
Passing: I loved Offurum's court vision and willingness to share the ball.
Rebounding: Offurum does a good job on the boards, combining strength and solid positioning.
Defense: Offurum will make the effort on the defensive side of the ball.
Intangibles: Mezie looks to be extremely coachable, listening intently to his coach during timeouts and interacting well with his teammates. He plays hard, and if there is any criticism, it's that he was too unselfish in the contest I witnessed.
Summary: This was my first look at Offurum, so I am going to see him again to verify my initial evaluation, but the reports I received from his summer play were accurate. This young man seems to be blowing up, and yet, I got the impression that he has no idea how good he can be.
He's got excellent size and athleticism for a college wing, plenty of skills, and has all the intangibles you look for in terms of a young man who's going to be easy to coach.
Offurum has an early Maryland offer, and we expect the Terps to continue to monitor his progress. He's got a bright future ahead of him.
