Sammy Faustin (Naples, Fla.) is taking the recruiting process a bit slower than most high-level prospects. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior safety has offers from schools in the Pac-12, Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12, but he’s yet to attend a college game; participate in a college camp; or visit a campus.
On top of that, Faustin broke his cell phone awhile back and hadn’t been able to call or text college coaches who offered until just recently. (He’s mainly been in communication via Twitter).
“I’m going to be getting out soon,” laughed Faustin, who has offers from Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, Iowa State and Kentucky. “I’m running track right now, so I’ve been tied up with that and with school. But I’ve got some places to get out to and see coming up.”
One of those places could be Maryland. The Terps were Faustin’s most recent offer in mid-February, representing his first of the Big Ten variety.
“The Maryland offer put me in a really good mood. I was very excited and it was a great feeling,” Faustin said. “I was actually at a track meet and I didn’t have a phone at that point, of course. So my coach called my friend and my friend told me about it (laughs). But then I contacted Coach Aazaar [Abdul-Rahim] later and found out more.”
Yes, Maryland’s defensive backs coach is one of the assistants Faustin has been in contact with through direct message. At this point, though, they’ve only had brief exchanges.
“I’ve talked to Coach Aazaar on Twitter and I thanked him for the opportunity to play at Maryland. He seems like a cool guy, and he talked a little about Maryland and said it is a great school,” Faustin said. “I told him I’d be looking into it more.”
Faustin hasn’t done so quite yet, however.
“I know it’s in the Big Ten and I know JC Jackson, who used to go to Florida, goes there,” Faustin said. “Beyond that, I really don’t know much. I’ve got to research it more. But it’s a school I’d like to see. Hopefully I can get up [north] and see a few schools that have offered me from up there.”
Besides UMD, Iowa State is a program Faustin wants to check out soon. He’s also trying to get out to Kentucky and Arizona “because those are both big schools and I’d like to see them.” Faustin will also be hitting in-state programs such as Florida and Florida State and possibly other nearby schools should they offer.
The Naples product is receiving interest from Auburn, Duke, FAU, Cincinnati and UF.
“Right now I’d say all the schools that have offered caught my eye,” Faustin said. “If possible I’d like to check them all out. I like all of them.”
Faustin said he didn’t grow up a fan of any team, but is seeking hometown looks. He said he likes the idea of playing near his family at a place like Florida or Florida State.
“But, really, I want to find somewhere where I can play early, and where I can fit in and be comfortable,” Faustin said. “Right now, I’m just seeing what [offers] come in and then go from there. I haven’t really decided on anything yet.”
