OL Zubovic Talks Up First Terps Trip

Belle Vernon (Pa.) tackle Blake Zubovic visited Maryland March 4.

Maryland’s new offensive line coach, Tyler Bowen, has been particularly busy his first full weekend in College Park, Md. The Terps have hosted a number of their top O-line recruit targets, meaning Bowen’s had to put his game face on and leave a great first impression.

One of those prospects who stopped by Maryland for his initial look at the Terps was Belle Vernon (Pa.) tackle Blake Zubovic, who UMD’s former line coach, Dave Borbely, offered in early February. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound Zubovic was eager to meet Bowen and see what Maryland was about, so he trekked down March 4 for a pre-weekend trip.

I loved visiting Maryland; it was a great time,” said Zubovic, who has offers from Pitt, UMD, NC State, BC, Temple, Minnesota, UVA and WVU. “The highlight for me was meeting Coach [D.J.] Durkin, Coach [Walt] Bell and Coach Bowen. I really enjoyed talking to them and they’re all great people. I love their energy and what they’re about.

Zubovic said he had a position meeting with Bowen. Apparently the coach won the Belle Vernon recruit over with his knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I talked to coach Bowen as well who sees me as a ‘swing player’ who could play either tackle or interior at a very high level,” Zubovic said. “He’s a really knowledgeable guy and it was great talking to him. I’m looking forward to getting to know him more.”

Zubovic, who attended with his parents, had a chance to tour the campus too. He’d never been in College Park before, so he was impressed with the setup and the look of the place.

“And the new facility upgrades will be in place for my graduating class, and they are awesome. The tunnel going to the new indoor fields is going to be something special,” said Zubovic, who praised Maryland’s academics as well. “And the Under Armour stuff and the uniforms are sick.”

After the trip, Zubovic said the Terps are in solid standing with him. He doesn’t have any leaders, but is intrigued by what Durkin and Co. have to offer.

“Maryland is very high on my list and I'll definitely be back down soon,” Zubovic said.

So far, Zubovic has seen UVA, Pitt, Temple and now UMD. He’ll be at Penn State and West Virginia coming up later in March.
