WR Jones Has UMD Up Top

WR Darryl Jones (Princess Anne/Virginia Beach, Va.) updates his status.

When quarterback Tyler DeSue (Bishop Sullivan/Virginia Beach, Va.) committed to Maryland April 12, the first name he broached in terms of prospects he’d be recruiting to College Park, Md., was receiver Darryl Jones (Princess Anne/Virginia Beach, Va.). The three-star wideout, who has held a UMD offer since January, is a good friend of DeSue’s, so it makes sense the gunslinger would want the wideout to join him.

“Oh yeah, Tyler’s my boy,” laughed Jones, who claims verbals from Maryland, Va Tech, UVA, WVU and a couple others. “We’ve known each other since we were little, and we played together all the way until high school. He’s already been hitting me up about Maryland. He was telling me, ‘Just wait until [April 12] – you’ll see.’ So he wants me there, and I know if I go [to UMD] I’ll have a great QB throwing me passes. Tyler’s a great quarterback and he made a great choice.”

Apparently the 6-foot-3, 175-pounder is giving serious thought to DeSue’s proposition too.

“My favorite right now is Maryland,” Jones said. “And not just because Tyler is going there. It’s close to home, the coaches hit me up every day, I know people up there, and I love the vibe there. It’s a great place to be.”

Jones took in College Park for the first time back in March. He plans to return in the very near future for a spring practice or perhaps the April 22 spring game.

“When I was up there before I loved what I saw there,” Jones said. “I loved the campus, the facilities they’re building and all the Under Armour stuff. All the gear and jerseys, that was really cool. And just meeting all the coaches and talking to them, they’re great.”

Specifically, area recruiter and position coach Chris Beatty. Jones has known Beatty for more than a year, and has been in regular contact since the offer was presented in January.

“Coach Beatty is my guy,” laughed Jones. “He’s awesome. He’s straightforward, and he tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. He’s a great coach too and has produced a lot of great receivers.”

Running a close second to Maryland at this juncture is Va Tech. Jones has been in Blacksburg, Va., before and will be heading back April 15.

“I like Tech’s offense, I like how they play, I like how they practice and I love the coaches,” Jones said. “When I went up there before I really enjoyed myself. But I didn’t get to see everything, so I want to go back.

“So I’d say definitely Maryland and Virginia Tech are my top two. Both of them have really been pushing for me.”

Jones is receiving interest from a few more prominent suitors, however. He said there isn’t one offer that could be considered a “game changer,” but admitted he’d venture out to more locales if coaches press for him.

“LSU, Louisville, Duke, UGA, Pitt and a few others – their coaches are saying they’re coming to the school to look at me,” Jones said. “So we’ll see what happens with that. But I’m not really looking for more offers. If a school wants to offer me, then they’ll come find me and I’ll look into them. If not, then that’s fine.”

Jones said he’d like to take multiple visits this summer and then choose his destination in late July or August.
