CLIFTON, Va. -- Before participating in the Nike Opening D.C. April 23, Freedom (South Riding, Va.) receiver Robert Mayo made it back to Maryland April 22 for the spring game. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound three-star dubbed UMD his leader following a March trip for a Terps' spring practice, and his latest foray only solidified those feelings.
"The spring game was great. Even though it was kind of rainy I had a great time up there," said Mayo, who has offers from UMD, Rutgers, NC State, Wake and ODU. "I like how they threw the ball a lot, and if I do end up going there, that would be great. I mean, I'm a receiver, so I want the ball. And I like how the receivers are looking and how the offense is moving.
"I really didn't see anything new up there that I hadn't before, but everything the coaches told me about the system and the offense I saw with my own eyes. So that was good [to verify that]. I feel like I could be a really good fit at Maryland."
After the scrimmage, Mayo spoke to recruiter and position coach Chris Beatty and then head coach D.J. Durkin. The recruit has known Beatty for more than a year, while it was his second time meeting Durkin in person.
"They were basically saying how they need me, I'm a big recruit for them, and they love my size and athleticism. They want me there bad," Mayo said. "And I really like what they're saying to me, just expressing how much they want me. That's why Maryland is my top school right now. They're my leader."
Maybe so, but Mayo isn't ready to commit just yet.
"I don't know, I just don't want to commit too early," Mayo said. "My dream school still is Florida State, so I'm hoping they talk to me eventually. And I would like to see what else comes in. But I do like Maryland a lot, and I'm thinking I'm going to commit in the summer."
Besides UMD, Mayo has a stated top four of UMD (his stated No. 1), NC State (his stated No. 2) and then ODU and Wake. Rutgers, however, just came in April 23, and now Mayo is thinking long and hard about tripping north to Piscataway, N.J. If he likes what he sees, the Scarlet Knights could become a real contender too.
Of his current offers, RU is the only school he's yet to check out firsthand. He's trying to revisit NC State, ODU and Wake later this spring/summer, and he might make it back to UMD as well.
