The Terps have a new BUCK target on their radar after UMD’s Georgia-area recruiter Walt Bell trekked through North Cobb High (Kennesaw, Ga.) and offered 2018 recruit Thurman Geathers. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder said he hadn’t had contact with Bell prior to May 1, but the Maryland offensive coordinator immediately grabbed his attention.
“I met Coach Bell, and then I talked to him on the phone for like an hour. That was the first time I’d ever talked to him, but it was a great conversation,” said Geathers, who previously had offers from Indiana, TCU, NC State, Kansas State, Rutgers, Minnesota, Syracuse, and a host of others. “He was a really good guy, but also very serious. He was very straightforward with me and told it like it is, which I liked. He told me they loved my film up there, and liked me at the ‘BUCK,’ which he explained. I thought [the BUCK position] fit me very well, because I can stand up and play outside linebacker and play defensive end.
“But [the Maryland coaches] also want me to keep my grades up and to keep working hard. He also wants to get me up there for a visit as soon as possible.”
Currently, Geathers doesn’t know a ton about the Maryland program. But he said he “definitely” wanted to take Bell up on his offer and at least visit the campus.
“Of course I want to go. Right away, after talking to Coach Bell, Maryland is a top-five school for me,” Geathers said. “I know it’s Big Ten and I know Stefon Diggs went there. It’s a good program. I’d love to see what it’s like.”
So far, Geathers has only visited South Carolina. But this summer he said he plans to see “like three schools a weekend,” with most of his current offerees on the radar.
“I definitely want to get to TCU. That’s a program I liked a lot growing up and have always had interest in. That’s a top-five school for me right now too,” Geathers said. “NC State is another one that’s definite top five. I want to see them. And then Indiana, that’s another big one; I’m in touch with the coach there a lot.”
In addition to Maryland, NC State, Indiana and TCU, Geathers is hearing from staffers from Wake Forest, Arkansas, UNC, South Carolina and Tennessee.
“Wake Forest should be offering real soon. If they do, they’d be right up there for me,” Geathers said. “Same with Arkansas. I think they might offer soon too, and it would be cool to have my first SEC offer. Then we’ll see what happens with the other schools [UNC, South Carolina, Tennessee]. I’m talking to those coaches, and I’d love to get offers from them.”
If all goes according to plan, Geathers would like to have his school chosen at some point this summer. He said he was thinking about a July 4 announcement at a family cookout, but allowed he might not be ready to announce by that date.
