Hardwood Notes: Second Live Eval Period

Here are the recruiting notes and recent changes we’ve made to the hot board heading into the summer months.

The April live AAU sessions ended April 30 with the Nike/Under Armour circuits wrapping up in Indianapolis, Ind., and the Adidas circuit winding down in Cartersville, Ga.

In our last update HERE, we mentioned how Maryland’s top targets performed after the second evaluation period. Here are the recruiting notes and recent changes we’ve made to the hot board heading into the summer months.

Point Guards

 Prentiss Hubb (Gonzaga/Washington, D.C.)

Temperature Reading: HOT

Projection: Maryland over Villanova… Should know by June where he’s headed. We continue to project him to UMD.

Immanuel Quickley (John Carroll/Bel Air, Md.)

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Kentucky or Duke over Maryland… Latest interviews suggest he’s still a bit starry-eyed. He’ll keep mentioning Maryland, but we don’t see him winding up in College Park, Md., unless the bluebloods back off.

 Eric Ayala (Putnam Science/Putnam, Conn.)

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Syracuse over UConn, Oregon, Maryland, Indiana, Arizona, Miami… UMD will push in earnest if Prentiss Hubb goes elsewhere. Syracuse has been the longtime favorite.

Devon Dotson (Providence Day/Charlotte, N.C.)

Temperature Reading: COOL (formerly “WARM)

Projection: Florida over Maryland and a host of others. … UF seems to lead, but Dotson is blowing up and now has many to consider. UMD has some ground to make up.

 Jahvon Quinerly (Hudson Catholic/Hudson, N.J.)

Temperature Reading: COOL

Projection: Villanova, UVA, Stanford, Arizona or Notre Dame… Terps are involved, but seem to be trailing other suitors. Nova may have a bead.

Shooting Guards

Keldon Johnson (Huntington Prep/Huntington, W.Va.)

Temperature Reading: HOT (formerly “WARM”)

Projection: Maryland, Texas, Kansas or Oregon … Terps could be positioned very well for a number of reasons, not the least of which is his connection to UMD assistant Kevin Broadus and College Park’s close proximity to his Northern Virginia home… But how will Johnson’s hot spring affect his status down the line?

Brandon Slater (Paul VI/Fairfax, Va.)

Temperature Reading: WARM (formerly “HOT)

Projection: Maryland or Nova or Louisville or Miami or UVA or Va Tech… A one-time surefire UMD target, Slater may be leveling off some. Terps will stay involved, but could be looking at others like Keldon Johnson and Aaron Wiggins.

Ryan Boyce (Germantown, Tenn.)

Temperature Reading: COOL

Projection: Florida over SMU, other SEC suitors… Maryland has offered, but Boyce is likely behind several in the pecking order. He also didn’t know much about the Terps before the April 25 verbal. Florida probably leads, and other SEC programs are involved.

Kiyon Boyd (Woodson/Washington, D.C.)

Temperature Reading: COLD

Projection: Georgetown or Va Tech… Maryland is no longer thought to be pushing. Boyd could re-class to 2019.

Small Forwards

Aaron Wiggins (Wesleyan Christian/High Point, N.C.)

Temperature Reading: HOT

Projection: Maryland over Wake, Florida, NC State, UVA, Kansas, USC, Providence… Wiggins has hinted in several interviews Terps have the edge after two visits to College Park. He’s keeping an open mind, though, and has exploded on the trail (Kansas now on him). He has numerous visits on his mind.

Louis King (Hudson Catholic/Jersey City, N.J.)

Temperature Reading: COOL (formerly “WARM)

Projection: Kentucky (no offer), Seton Hall, Kansas, Indiana, NC State, UConn, Louisville, Miami or Maryland … Terps’ Bino Ranson is on King, but we don’t get the sense he’s a top priority. We don’t envision a major push here from Mark Turgeon. Recent offers from UConn, IU, NC State have shaken up his recruitment some.

Jairus Hamilton (Cannon/Concord, N.C.)

Temperature Reading: COLD (formerly “COOL”)

Projection: N/A… Hamilton has leveled off a bit this spring, and it’s unclear which staffs are still in hot pursuit. Maryland, which has had Cliff Warren on Hamilton, isn’t thought to be pushing.

Power Forwards

Jalen Smith (Mount St. Joseph/Baltimore, Md.)

Temperature Reading: HOT

Projection: Maryland over Villanova, UVA, Notre Dame… We still see Smith ultimately winding up at UMD, although Notre Dame or Nova could make things interesting.

Silvio De Sousa (IMG Academy/Bradenton, Fla.)

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Louisville, Maryland, Florida, Kansas and more… DeSousa’s stock is on the rise and his recruitment has taken off. He’s in a holding pattern as he reevaluates new options. Terps are still in a solid spot due to Bruno Fernando connection and standout rapport with coaches.

Jaylen Hoard (Wesleyan Christian/High Point, N.C.)

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Wake Forest over Providence, Cal, Oklahoma State, Maryland… Thought is Terps won’t truly push for Hoard unless Jalen Smith falls by the wayside. Hoard has been in College Park though and likes UMD a good deal.

Centers

 Moses Brown (Archbishop Molloy/Jamaica, N.Y.)

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Kentucky over Duke, Maryland, Kansas … Going with a gut feeling on this one. Terps are in the thick of things, but Brown seems like the type who winds up at Kentucky.

David McCormack (Oak Hill/Mouth of Wilson, Va.):

Temperature Reading: WARM

Projection: Duke, Kansas, Maryland, Georgetown, NC State, Louisville, others… Recruitment has opened up with a solid spring. Terps remain a possible landing spot after College Park visit and his rapport with Dustin Clark. McCormack has an eye on Duke for the moment.

 Bryce Golden (St. James, Md.)

Temperature Reading: COOL

Projection: Penn State or Pitt. … Terps may not push unless it’s clear they might miss on multiple bigs or they can somehow swing a five-man class. Golden is a solid four-year player with toughness, however, and we expect UMD to maintain a relationship with him.

Ideal 2018 Class Projection: Prentiss Hubb, Keldon Johnson, Aaron Wiggins, Jalen Smith, Moses Brown/Silvio DeSousa
