St. Frances (Baltimore, Md.) receiver Tyree Henry has been quiet all spring, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder concentrating on his studies, workouts and rehabbing a spinal injury he suffered last season. But the three-star from Berlin, Md., plans to start honing in on recruiting in the near future. Henry, who still has the same offers from Maryland, Va Tech, West Virginia, Syracuse and Pitt, has numerous schools he’d like to visit this summer.
“So far, Maryland is the only place I’ve been, and I haven’t been there since a [prospect] day a couple months ago,” Henry said. “But I’m going to be getting back out soon with the school year coming to an end. Va Tech, UVA, Syracuse, Pitt, UConn, Michigan State and Michigan are some of the places I want to get to. All of those schools are showing interest in me and talking to me.”
Henry said coaches from UMD and Va Tech speak to him the most, however.
“Maryland, they definitely still want me there,” said Henry, who first received a UMD look almost two years ago when assistant Matt Barnes offered him at the recruit’s former school, Stephen Decatur (Berlin, Md.). “They still like me as a receiver. I usually talk to Coach Barnes and also the head coach, DJ Durkin. They talk to me about life in general, doing well in the classroom and thins like that. They talk about recruiting too, but it’s mainly more personal with them. I’ve known Coach Barnes for a long while now, so it’s a real tight relationship. We usually talk about once a week, and he messages me to see how I’m doing.”
Henry hasn’t been on campus since the winter, but he did attend several games last fall and camps last summer. He’ll be back in College Park this summer as well.
“I like it there. It’s home, and I’m comfortable at Maryland,” Henry said. “I like what they’re offering and where the program’s going under Coach Durkin.
“The whole DMV movement thing, that’s big too. I know a few guys from the area going there, and my [former teammate, B’ahmad Miller] is going there.”
Henry had previously called UMD his clear leader, but he backed off that statement months back. He’s keeping the Terps under prime consideration, but wants to fully gauge his options and which programs truly push for him before naming favorites.
“Everyone who has offered me is still talking to me – Maryland, Pitt, Va Tech WVU, Syracuse. I still talk to coaches from all those schools,” Henry said. “And some others are starting to pick things up like Michigan State, Michigan and UVA.
“Maryland was the first school to stop by [St. Frances] when Coach [Jimmy] Brumbaugh came through. Then Tech was in the other day, and Pitt; Michigan State; and Ohio State have been in. There are a bunch more coming through too.”
Henry, who insists all his looks are still for receiver, said he’d like to go through the official visit process before committing.
