Terps After QB Roberson

The Terps offered dual-threat 2019 QB Taquan Roberson May 11.

Maryland offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Walt Bell has been searching around for 2019 quarterbacks after landing a 2018 signal caller, and the latest dual-threat he identified was DePaul Catholic's Taquan Roberson. The 6-foot-1, 182-pound three-star shined as a sophomore starter last season, completing over 50 percent of his throws for 1,1774 yards and nine touchdowns against seven interceptions. He ran for 365 more yards and two more scores.

"Actually, it wasn't usual how it happened. The linebackers coach, Matt Barnes, he was up here looking at one of our linebackers, but then he saw me throw. Then he told Coach [Walt] Bell about me. And after evaluating me, Coach Bell loved me," said Roberson, who had verbals from VT, UNC, Rutgers and Temple. "He offered me. It was great. It was a great offer to get. It's another school i'm going to be looking at closely."

Roberson hasn't been to College Park, Md., before, but he'd like to visit this summer. If not, he wants to get to a game during the fall.

"I know it's a real good school," said Roberson, who wasn't privy to UMD's offense. "I know they are building good facilities and a really building things up there. I know its' a program on the rise. I know a couple guys that are going there too, and they say it's great and a pretty nice place. So i'm going to be looking at them.

"I'm looking into to visiting them, and I thank them for giving me a shot. I haven't been up there yet, so i can't say much more, but i do like what i see initially."

Maryland isn't the only school after Roberson, though. He said coaches from BC, UConn, PSU, Stanford, Wake, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, UNC, NC State, Rutgers and a couple more have been in touch. Roberson isn't looking for any offers in particular, but he did have one program he always wanted to play for.

"My dream school is Clemson. I love Deshaun Watson and I even liked them when they had Tahj Boyd," Roberson said."Clemson is always a school that I wanted to play for. But if not, I'm cool with the offers I have. I have good options."

"It's very humbling and a great experience," Roberson said. "I'm keeping an open mind. No leaders. But it's been a whirlwhind. It's a lot going through my mind."

Roberson has been through Rutgers a couple times and has seen the spring game. At first blush, the Scarlet Knights stand out due to the atmosphere, the fans, the coaches' welcoming message and more.

But Roberson isn't going to commit to RU anytime soon. He has a number of programs on his radar, inclining, UNC, Va Tech, UMD, VA Tech, UVA, UNC, Wake, Duke and more.

"Right now, Rutgers is the only school I've been to. I'm very interested in them. I loved the coaches, It's an amazing atmosphere and I love the fans up there," Roberson said. "But I want to get to all my offers. Right now i have UNC set up definitively for a visit June 11, and VT after that...But I'm just thankful for the offers I have and I plan to visit all of the schools that want me."

Roberson went on to say academics are of primary concern to him.

"I want to major in business or finances, so what school is best for me in that field and football wise is what I'll go with," he said. "I'd like to play in a spread offense ideally, but i can adjust to whatever. I can do whatever."

Roberson doesn't plan to commit until after he evaluates which schools truly want him next offseason.

As a sophomore, Roberson completed 87 of 172 passes for 1,174 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 365 yards and two touchdowns.
