The Maryland staff has identified numerous outside linebacker targets in its 2018 class, and the latest offer went out to Stephenson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) outside backer Dionte Gipson. Gipson, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder, was "exstatic" when he learned about the verbal May 11.
"I was excited. Coach Andy Buh texted me and told me to call him. He asked a couple questions and then said he liked me at outside linebacker. Then he offered," said Gipson, who had only a few offers from programs like Middle Tennessee and FAU before picking up UMD. "It makes me want to work harder. Honestly, that was great to hear, but I can play outside, inside, all over. I can help out their defense in any way. That was first time in contact with Buh. I've also talked to Coach [Matt] Barnes, who has given me more information about the program. He's told me about the defense and all that."
Gipson also lauded the Under Armour/Bg Ten connections and the school's rise through the ranks. He liked the academics and various major opportunities too.
Previously, Gipson had been to Tennessee, Clemson, UGA, Samford, Charlotte and MTSU.
"I want to see Maryland's campus," he said. "Beyond that, nothing in particular."
Gipson has no other visits coming up after UMD. He doesn't have any dream schools or offers he's hoping for. NC State and EKU have been in touch, however.
"I just want to make the right decision," said Gipson, who is closely monitoring defenses and wants to play in a system where he can actively rush the passer. "I like the offers I have and the programs that have offered me."
He has no timeline for selecting a school.
