Terps, Others Make Charlton's Leaderboard

Three-star Miami Southridge (Miami, Fla.) defensive end/outside linebacker Randy Charlton now has a number of options on the table after college coaches have seen him in action this spring. Baylor, Tennessee, Oregon, Syracuse, Maryland, Indiana, Nebraska, Michigan State, Mississippi State, and a couple others have come through with offers.

The Terps were the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder’s latest verbal May 15.

“Maryland has always been a school I’ve known about,” Charlton said. “Just because of Under Armour and all the colors and jerseys they have, I’ve always noticed them. But now I just have to go more in-depth and learn more about the program and the academics.”

Charlton specifically heard from UMD recruiter Chris Beatty.

“Coach Beatty first got in touch with me about a month ago,” Charlton said.. “Then he stopped by the school to see me work out. He really likes my game and said the coaches wanted to offer me. He likes my film, he said I’m a ball-seeker, and he thinks I rush the passer well.

“Coach Beatty said Maryland likes me at their BUCK position, where I can play as a outside linebacker and a defensive end. I like that, because I can be versatile.”

Charlton proceeded to say Beatty is one of four college assistants who speaks to him the most. That’s one of the primary reason the Floridian has the Terps on his initial top-10 leaderboard.

“Maryland, Tennessee, Baylor and Syracuse are always on me. The Syracuse coach comes down a lot,” Charlton said. “So those four are in my top 10, and then Oregon; Baylor; Colorado; Iowa State; Michigan State; Temple; and Indiana. All those schools have been down to see me and are talking to me.”

Tennessee is one program that has Charlton’s eye. He’s been to Rocky Top before and liked what he saw.

“Tennessee, they actually just signed a player who I played with last year, DeAndre Johnson,” Charlton said. “[Johnson] always talks them up and said it would be a great fit for me. Then their coaches are always in touch too and showing love. I like it up there. They stand out some.”

Oregon, meanwhile, is on the radar as well. Charlton said he grew up watching the Ducks due to their “flashy uniforms,” while he also has a friend who signed with Oregon.

Charlton then said Baylor is attractive because they’re fielded standout defensive linemen in the past, and their coaches could readily develop him. And Syracuse is in play since the edge rusher is close with the staff.

“But a lot of these schools I have to still visit and see how I’d fit in,” Charlton said. “I’ve only seen Tennessee, FSU, Georgia and Georgia Tech so far. There’s a lot of places I have to get to.”

Charlton isn’t sure which locales he’ll be able to check out this summer, however. He said he’ll be traveling around with an assistant coach who is in the process of planning out their tour.

“But I will tell you I definitely want to take an official visit to Tennessee, take an official to Oregon and take an official to Syracuse,” Charlton said. “I want to take all five officials, but I’d say those three schools [Tennessee, Oregon, SU] will definitely be three of them.”

Charlton said there’s no offers in particular he’s waiting for as he’s content with his current suitors.

“But if more come in I’ll take a look,” he said. “I’m just taking things as they come.”
