DE Mercier Lands Terps Offer

The Terps offered Atlantic (Delray Beach, Fla.) defensive end Jason Mercier May 18.

The Maryland coaches landed defensive end Dion Goldbourne out of Atlantic High (Delray Beach, Fla.) in the 2016 class, and now they're after another of the school's edge rushers. Jason Mercier pulled a UMD offer from area recruiter Chris Beatty May 18, giving him near 20 verbals.

"I was actually surprised about the Maryland offer, to be honest," said Mercier, who has looks from UMD, TCU, Pitt, Rutgers, Indiana, Louisville, Kansas State, Iowa State, Syracuse, UCF and others. "Coach Beatty literally just came down and just contacted me [May 18]. I just started talking to him. I mean, he came to a game last year, but this was the first time I'd actually had contact with him. He told me he liked my get-off, size and athleticism. I was grateful he offered."

Mercier's knowledge of Maryland is limited. He knows the basics, but beyond that, he's in the dark.

"But I know one of our alumni, Dion, went there. He was actually just down here to stop by," Mercier said. "He said he really liked it up there and it's a great school. So I'll look into them more, but right now I don't know much."

Mercier said almost all of his suitors have been through Atlantic to see him. He's in touch with coaches from Louisville, Rutgers, Indiana, Pitt and TCU the most, saying he speaks to each program's recruiter regularly. He's in the process of developing a rapport with Maryland and Beatty.

The Atlantic High product has visited FSU, Miami, UF, FAU, USF and UCF. He'll be getting to locales out of state this summer, headlined by Louisville and Georgia (interested, no offer).

"But I want to try to get to all the schools that have offered me," Mercier said. "I don't have a set schedule yet, and I'm not sure where I'll be able to get to, but I'd like to see as many of the schools that want me as I can."

Mercier said he has no leaders or early standouts. He isn't looking for any offers in particular and doesn't have a dream school either. He grew up a Miami fan, but the Canes' coaches haven't made a push.

"Basically I'm just looking for a school that wants me, where I can play as a true freshman and the coaches treat you like family," Mercier said. "Location doesn't really matter to me. I don't mind going farther away from home for school."

Mercier isn't sure when he'll be ready to commit. But, more than likely, it'll be after his senior season since he wants to take most of his official visits.
