Big athletic players such as Charles from a football productive area such as the Baltimore/D.C. Metro area are often recruited by the who’s who of college football. After his sophomore season, which Charles didn’t start, but played a lot and was continuing to grow into his 6’-6” frame, Charles was expecting to be recruited heavily, until he realized one day that he couldn’t bend his big toe. Doctor’s then informed him that the injury would require surgery and force him too miss his junior season of football and basketball. Several scouts attended Gonzaga games last year to watch WR Doug Dutch a Michigan recruit, his coach told them about Charles Young and they have kept in touch. Charles realizes how important this summer will be to his recruiting process.
“I don’t have game tape to give coaches, so they have all said it’s very important that I attend camps. I plan on attending all four of my favorite schools football camps.”
Pittsburgh and Maryland are his leaders; Pittsburgh holds the edge partly due to the fact that his mom likes the University.
“My mom loves the academics at Pittsburgh.”
So what does Charles like about some of his favorites?
Pittsburgh- “The academics are solid. I like the location it’s in the city, which is important for me. It’s close enough 2 hours away but it’s not too close to home.”
Maryland- “I’ve been there before I like it. I like the area but it may be too close to home.”
One of Young’s biggest influences in football is “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson who was formerly a stand out player with the Miami Hurricanes.
“My coach has old game tapes and I watch them. He is amazing the way he just destroyed people, and he is so athletic. I can’t believe he didn’t make it to the NFL.”
Charles plays power forward for the Gonzaga High School basketball team. He has a 2.9 GPA and took his SAT March 27th. He has a max bench of 235 lbs., and a max squat of 410lbs.
