Jones Wants to Play in the ACC

It seems inevitable that Broome (S.C.) wide receiver Markish Jones will spend his college career in the Atlantic Coast Conference. For which school he'll play, well, that is far less certain. But Maryland remains a possibility, he said Sunday.

Asked if he is still considering Maryland after a recent offer from the home-state school, Clemson, Jones answered: "Yeah, strongly."

Jones, a 6-foot, 190-pound speedster, has a list of five schools for consideration: Maryland, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

"I'm trying to stay in the ACC," he said. "I just love the Atlantic Coast Conference."

Despite relatively modest numbers last season (35 catches for 550 yards) Jones has a fantastic package of size, speed and athleticism. He runs a 4.37-second 40-yard dash and won Class 2A state titles in all four of his outdoor track events last spring -- long jump and the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.

At this point, though, it appears the Terps may be on the outside looking in. Jones has not visited College Park yet but said he hopes to take an official visit this fall. He hasn't spoken with members of the staff since early this summer. Yet he plans to make his commitment in September.

Still, he insisted Maryland is very much in contention, so we'll continue to monitor his recruitment.
