Terps 'At the Top' for Braswell

DeMatha rising junior Chris Braswell, the No. 17 player in the Class of '08, has a relatively short list of schools he's seriously looking at right now. Right near the top of that list sits the University of Maryland.

Georgetown and Maryland are two of the primary contenders for the services of the a do-it-all 6-foot-9 forward who burst up the charts this summer.

“I think both of them are right there at the top,” DeMatha coach Mike Jones said. “He talks a lot about going to games [at Maryland] and his unofficial visits.”

Braswell is a unique talent in that he is already polished in the post and the perimeter. He’s a very good defender, can score in a variety of ways and, perhaps most strikingly, has excellent passing skills for a young big man.

“It’s uncanny for a big man to be able to do the things he does,” Jones said. He added that Braswell is an athletic player, but “only uses his athleticism when he needs to, which gives him an advantage.

“He reminds me of Antoine Walker because of his ability to handle the ball at 6-9 and shoot.”

Braswell has been courted heavily by the University of Texas, which is another program he’ll be taking a long look at. Meantime, Braswell has spoken to Maryland head coach Gary Williams about playing at Maryland, Jones said.

Braswell also is a great kid who has fit in very well with his classmates and teachers at the Hyattsville powerhouse since he transferred from Suitland High School after his freshman year.
