Pope Intrigued by Terps' Playing Style

It's been difficult to get a handle on the Herb Pope recruitment, which seems to take a new turn every week. We got up with Pope today as Herb was on the way to the airport for a visit to Oklahoma, which also happens to be where top Maryland target Jai Lucas will be this weekend.

Herb Pope's list looks like this: UMD, Cincy, Texas, Pitt, OU and Memphis. He said he expects to take a visit to Texas, a newly arrived player in his recruitment, and is now unsure if he'll visit Memphis after all. He's also unsure when he'll come to a decision.

"If I find the right school, then I might [commit during the early period]. If not, then I won't," he said.

He said he and Lucas have spoken about the possibility of playing together at Maryland, but haven't talked in a little while now. Pope, a multi-skilled 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward ranked by Scout.com as the No. 16 player in the Class of 2007,  enjoyed his visit to Maryland Madness last month and got to know head coach Gary Williams. He said his comfort with the coaching staff is his top priority.

"He's a good guy," Pope said of Williams. "The coaching staff is really good and the conference is great."

Pope was rushed as he was preparing to hop on his flight, but he added that the Terps remain in contention for his services and he is intrigued by Maryland's playing style.

"They play a lot of four out, one in," he said. "I think I would fit in really well."
