Va. Star 'Honored' by Gary Williams Visit
Dawkins, a 2010 standout who grew up a Duke fan, plans to be in attendance this Sunday for the big game. Not that it will have a great effect on who he eventually commits to, but the Terps wouldn't be hurt by producing a strong showing. Then again, Williams' unexpected visit to Virginia Beach seemed to do that already.
"Gary Williams came to my game the other day. That kind of surprised me," said Dawkins, who is averaging 24.2 points and seven rebounds as a sophomore. "It's an honor to have Gary Williams come to your game, but I'm just trying to stay level headed … That's plays a big part. It shows they're generally interested, and they'll definitely be in consideration."
Dawkins, 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, grew up rooting for Duke because his father did and has taken an unofficial visit to Durham. But he has no favorites at this point, preferring to let the process play out and continue evaluating his options until the summer before his senior year. Clemson offered this weekm Old Dominion has offered, and Georgetown, Duke, Virginia Tech and wake Forest all are showing interest. Over time, he'll collect plenty of major offers.
Dawkins has a reputation as a big-time outside shooter who can also get to the basket. He recently scored 27 points against Benedictine (Va.) and UNC recruit Ed Davis. He also spent much of his life a stone's throw from College Park in Laurel and Ft. Washington, before his family moved south.
"Yeah that helps a little bit," he said. "Them and Georgetown are recruiting me hard and I have a lot of family on the area."
Dawkins plays for Boo Williams' perennially strong AAU program, the same one that produced Terps guard Eric Hayes. It'll be quite a while before we find out if he'll wear the same college uniform as Hayes, but Williams' cameo in Virginia Beach this week certainly didn't hurt the Terps' chances.
