Juco Forward Bowman Commits to Terps

Maryland basketball recruiting continues to heat up, and TurtleSportsReport.com has the breaking news again. Hutchinson ( Kan. ) Community College sophomore Ken Bowman committed to the University of Maryland this past weekend, Bowman told TSR...

Bowman was in town with teammate Bobby Maze, a recent Terps commitment. After enjoying the Duke game and spending much of the weekend with the coaches and players, he committed to head coach Gary Williams, he said.

Williams "was happy about it. He was ready to get it going," Bowman said.

Bowman is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward averaging 16.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the floor and 67.8 percent from the free-throw line. He also has blocked a team-high 30 shots in 21 games.

"I'm inside-out, can shoot the jumper, good defensive player," he said when asked to describe his game.

The Terps, assuming Maze and St. Frances ( Md. ) senior Sean Mosley matriculate to Maryland as expected, would seem to be out of scholarships for next year. But Bowman said he isn't worried about that.

"They will have a scholarship," he said.

When asked again about whether the scholarship jam worries him, he said, again, "They're going to have a scholarship."

Bowman spent parts of his youth in Arizona and California, finishing his high school hoops career at George Washington High in South Central Los Angeles. He wasn't recruited by any major programs coming out of high school, but has made major strides since then, and has recently attracted plenty of attention, including recent interest from Kentucky and others.

"I ended up at juco just by circumstance," he said.

Bowman had never been to the Washington metropolitan area prior to last weekend, but he enjoyed his stay.

"It was cool being in the Nation's Capital. Everybody there knows [Maze]," he said. "And it's the ACC. Everybody knows that's the big-time conference in college basketball."

"Of course it'll be good to play with [Maze] because we're used to playing with each other and we know each other's game."

Southern California , St. John's and Kansas State were the remaining finalists for Bowman, who held offers from all three. Stay tuned to TSR as we continue to expand on this breaking story and bring you the highest quality Terps coverage anywhere...
