The Latest on Andre Dawkins

There seems little doubt that shooting guard Andrew Dawkins of Atlantic Shores Christian School in Virginia Beach is a prospect of high interest for Maryland's basketball staff. But how does Dawkins feel about the Terps, and what are the chances of him making an early commitment? TurtleSportsReport.com has the latest …

Dawkins, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard in the Class of 2010, has been to Maryland on multiple occasions and seemingly has surfaced as perhaps the No. 1 target at his position in what will be a make-or-break class for the Maryland program. He also continues to hear from Duke, Georgetown (offer), Virginia tech (offer), Virginia (offer), Clemson (offer) and Wake Forest.

Who is recruiting him the hardest?

"I would say Maryland right now," he said. "Maybe Maryland and Clemson."

Dawkins has forged a good relationship with Maryland assistant coach Chuck Driesell, who has been down to watch him on numerous occasions. Meanwhile, head coach Gary Williams made a trip down to the Beach during last season to check out the big-time scorer.

Driesell "just lets me know that they want me. He's not trying to rush me into a choice. The offer will always be there, whenever I'm ready to make my decision," Dawkins said.

There had been some speculation that perhaps Dawkins could make an early call, but that seems unlikely at this point.

"I'm planning on doing it the fall before my senior season," said the rising junior. "I think I will wait, just to see how everything plays out as far as schools and coaches. With college basketball, coaches are always a toss-up [in terms of whether they will still be there]," he said.v
Dawkins was a Duke fan as a younger child, but that won't play any role should the Blue Devils make a strong run at him. He laughed when we suggested the Maryland staff might demand that he ditch those early-formed allegiances.

"I don't think that will effect my decision. Before I was a fan, and now I'm a recruit and looking at it from a recruit's standpoint. I'm not stuck on them, so I don't think it would be like, as soon as they offer I would just take it."

Dawkins has played well with Boo Williams' AAU program this summer. His next stop will be at the Nike Jamboree in St. Louis. He also plans to make another tip North to check out Maryland and Georgetown again. Wake Forest has invited him for an elite camp, and Duke is looking for a visit as well.
