Miller on a Mission

Horace Miller walked off the field shocked about what just happened. His team, Two-time defending State Champion Dunbar High School (Baltimore, MD) had just suffered a loss at perennial state power Gwynn Park High School 33-32, ending a 24 game winning streak.

“It has been a long time since I felt this feeling,” said the All-State DE/LB.  “We definitely didn’t expect this.”

It is understandable; Dunbar had won their 3rd State Championship in four years last December.  This team is used to dominating opponents.  With a rich tradition and history of winning, year in and year out Dunbar has several D-I prospects and this year is no different.  Many think this is the best team of the last few years.

“We won’t lose again,” said the 2 star LB prospect.  “We will grow from this and win our 3rd straight State Championship.  That will take the sting of the loss away.  I will do everything in my power to make sure.”

Part of the enormous success Dunbar has had is due to Miller’s impact on the defense.

“We have Tavon (Austin) and the guys carry the offense, but the defense is a big part of our success as well,” said Miller.

He is a big reason why.  Miller finished last season with 90 tackles, 17 sacks, 25 tackles for loss and 26 hurries.  Amazingly he did it while spending much of the time in a three point stance with his 6’2” 210 lb frame.

“I played inside a lot and also as end.”  This year Miller would like to get to the 30 sack plateau.  He already has 18 in 9 games and with Dunbar the favorites to reach the Championship game again; he could play up to 5 more games.

With these eye popping numbers it is no wonder Miller is hearing from schools around the country.  Another thing that helped was his off season success. He trained very hard increasing his numbers across the board including adding to his bench max, lowering his forty to 4.59 and increasing his vertical to 37 inches.  He also won the National “My Better Championships” in Oregon this summer.

“That really helped get my name out and show the kind of athlete I am.”

Miller, a B-student, currently has offers from UNLV and Louisiana-Monroe.  “I talk with Coach Patterson from UNLV just about every week.  I am also hearing from Western Michigan.  I talk with Coach McCarty a lot.  I have also talked with Coach Slade at Tennessee where I camped this summer”.  Miller is a fan of the Big Ten Conference and would like to hear from Minnesota and Purdue as well as Virginia Tech, Florida State and Vanderbilt.

One school in particular Horace wants to hear more from is Maryland.

“I would love the chance to stay home and play for my home state school and have my family and friends see me play all the time.  I am confident that when the schools see me play as DE and LB this year that my offers will increase,” said Miller.  “I want to be the Defensive Player of the Year and join Tavon.”

Current teammate Tavon Austin, a 5 star RB/WR prospect, is the reigning two-time Offensive Player of the Year.

“I have the focus and the work ethic and hopefully others will see that too.  I know if I play to that level, with the other players we have, we will be State Champs again.”
