Terp's Recruiting Target…Khalek Shepherd

2010 prospect Khalek Shepherd of Gwynn Park High School (Brandywine, MD) is off and running well. The three-star running back holds a Maryland offer and would be a good addition to the Terp's backfield.

Khalek Shepherd has big play potential. He has good speed and is elusive in the open field. He has good vision and sets up his blocks well. Although he is just 5'8" and weighs 175 pounds he is strong and has good balance. He can break arm tackles but is better in space. He has the moves and speed to take it to the house anytime. Shepherd's versatility may lead him to lining up as a wide receiver and kick returner in college as well.

Shepherd has held a Maryland offer since early in his junior year when he was selected all-state running back. This year Shepherd is off to another great season. Through five games Shepherd has 683 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. After an opening struggle and one point victory over talented Forestville Academy, Gwynn Park has outscored their opponents 150-13 and upped its record to 5-0. Shepherd is a major part of his team's early success. He has rushed for at least one hundred yards and two touchdowns in each game so far this season. He has the ability to be productive despite being the target of the defense. Much credit goes to his teammates and the coaching but Shepherd is a difference maker.

Maryland and Boston College have offered Shepherd so far. With his skill set and senior season he is having it won't be long for other schools to offer. Shepherd's father is former Washington Redskin wide receiver Leslie Shepherd. Living locally and Maryland establishing their interest early will only help the local school. When I was around Shepherd last winter on the Maryland campus it was clear that he and his father have a good rapport with the Maryland coaches. Shepherd is another talented recruit that Maryland would like to keep in state. The state has produced many talented players recently and it seems the trend of high caliber recruits and strong recruiting classes will continue. Maryland is showing signs they are committed and ready to battle with any school over the most sought after recruits in their own backyard. Gaining a commitment from Shepherd will a great win for the Terps.
