2011 Intro- Trevor Cooney

TSR's Josh Vitale talks to 2011 hoops prospect Trevor Cooney.

He has not even begun his junior basketball season and already Trevor Cooney is a popular man in college basketball.

Cooney, from Delaware, is a four-star prospect, and Scout has him as the #9 ranked shooting guard in the 2011 recruiting class. He has received offers from Syracuse, Villanova, Duke, and Pittsburgh, among others. But he is also interested in possibly becoming a Terrapin.

One of the reasons that Cooney originally became interested in Maryland was their coaching staff. “I have a good interest level in the University of Maryland,” said Cooney, “I've started to build a relationship with some of the coaches. The opportunity to play for a coach like Gary Williams is awesome. He's been coaching forever, and he's coached some great players. It would be an honor to play for him.”

As a sophomore at the Sanford School, Cooney averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, and was a second team All-State selection. Despite the impressive numbers, he still believes there is room for improvement.

“I want to improve all aspects of my game,” said Cooney, “I would like to improve my defense, along with getting in better shape and working harder in the gym.”

Another reason Cooney has Maryland on his list is their style of play. “I think that Maryland fits my game as a shooting guard,” said Cooney, “I know that they like to get it and go and they like to have the ball in the guards' hands.”

While Cooney does not have any favorites yet, Maryland is definitely on his list. He is impressed with the coaches they have on staff, and very impressed with the basketball program as a whole.

“The campus is very nice, and it's not too far from home,” said Cooney, “I had a very good visit to Maryland.”
