2011 Intro: Brandon Phelps

TSR's Pete Volk spoke to 2011 prospect Brandon Phelps about his season and the recruiting process.

Junior Brandon Phelps is a standout wide receiver and cornerback at local Damascus (Md.) High School, and has helped the Hornets to a 5-2 start, including an important win this past weekend against defending 4A state champion Sherwood. Through October 9th's game against Watkins Mill, Phelps had 15 catches for 185 yards with four touchdowns and 6 rushes for 49 yards. Phelps is a 6-foot-0 wide receiver/cornerback who is projected to play wide receiver in college.

“It's going pretty well,” he said. “But there's always room for improvement. We've lost two games to two good teams and after those losses we've been working really hard to make sure we don't lose any more.”

Damascus lost a tough game in late September to in-state rival Seneca Valley, 16-15. Phelps says that the team was able to rebound from that loss well, leading to three straight Hornet victories.

“After that loss we came together after that film session,” he said. “And basically said that we have a chance to do something special this year and that we can't have another loss. Ever since that loss practice has been more intense,we're a lot more focused, and we've been playing with a lot more passion.”

Recruiting is just starting for Phelps, who does not have any scholarship offers yet. He says that he is being targeted as a receiver at the next level, and is hearing from Rutgers, Maryland, Boston College, LSU, and Georgia. Phelps lists his number one school as Maryland.

“Well first off it's close to home,” he said. “And the campus is nice. They also have a great football program.”

After Maryland, Phelps rounds out his Top 5 with Boston College, Georgia, LSU, and Rutgers.
