Athletic Lineman Hearing from Maryland

TSR's Matt Birchenough caught up with Bergen Catholic junior Zach Sparber. Sparber is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound athletic lineman who has seen his recruiting start to pick up

Bergen Catholic High School (N.J.) lineman Zach Sparber has been contacted by an impressive list of schools.

The class of 2011 prospect has heard from Maryland, Georgia, Duke, Rutgers, and Boston College.

“All are really solid programs,” said Sparber. “I'd jump at the opportunity to go to any of those schools.”

Sparber, who said Maryland asked him for his tape, expressed positive feelings for the Terps.

“I like Maryland. I root for them if I see them,” he said. “[Baltimore Ravens wide receiver] Isaiah Williams from Bergen went to Maryland. I know that.”

Sparber has played offensive and defensive line at Bergen Catholic, and said that schools have not specified whether they are looking at him for offense or defense.

“As of right now, I'm playing more on the offensive side of the ball. I would assume that that's what I'm being looked at right now,” said Sparber.

He went on, “I'm liable to grow. My father's 6-foot-5. I'm already 6-3 and a half, 6-4. If I can get up to 6-5, I think I can play offensive line at the college level, and if not, I think I'll be able to play defense too.”

While Sparber has good size at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, he believes that his athletic ability is his best attribute.

“I have good feet. I play varsity basketball for my school. I played varsity as a sophomore,” he said. “I guess you can say I'm a pretty athletic lineman. Athleticism is probably my strong point.”

Sparber was at Boston College for a camp that the Bergen Catholic team attended. He has also been to Rutgers a few times. The lineman said he would like to visit the schools that have contacted him during the upcoming offseason.
