Maryland is in the Mix for Mertz

2011 offensive tackle Shane Mertz told TSR that the Terps recently offered him and a very much in the mix for his services.

The Maryland Terrapins football coaching staff recently extended a football scholarship to 2011 offensive tackle Shane Mertz. “They offered me on Thursday (April 22). I have not gotten the letter yet, but they have offered me.” Mertz is also sporting an offer from an ACC rival, Duke.

Although Mertz is a little lighter than your typical offensive tackle at 275 pounds, he was still able to impress the Terps staff. “Being a little bit lighter last year allowed me have a good footwork and put together a good highlight film”

“The offensive line coach (Tom Brattan), head coach (Ralph Friedgen) and offensive coordinator (James Franklin) really liked my tape so they decided to offer me. They said they like my athletic ability. Maryland was one of the first schools to start recruiting me. I first started hearing from them last December. “

Mertz's latest offer has given him opportunity to familiarize himself with everything Maryland has to offer. “Immediately after they offered I went online and looked at their facilities and I loved it. It looked really nice and I plan on visiting sometime in May. Maryland is definitely up there. They are close to Duke.

Mertz has not a set a timetable for making a decision. He plans just letting the process play out. Wherever Mertz lands up they will have a strong engineering program. “I'm definitely looking at the engineering. I want to be a mechanical engineer so that's the first thing I look.
