Coach Williams Take On His New Assistant

TSR spoke with Terps head coach Gary Williams and got his take on Maryland's new hire, Coach Ranson.

When Maryland assistant coach Chuck Driesell left to become the head coach at The Citadel in April, Gary Williams was left with a void in his coaching staff. However, that void was filled when the Terps hired Orlando “Bino” Ranson to become the new assistant coach.

Coach Ranson has deep ties to the Maryland area. He coached at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. He previously worked under former Maryland assistant, Jimmy Patsos, at Loyola.

Gary Williams has known for Ranson for almost a decade, and described the hiring of Ranson as “being a right fit here [Maryland].”

Coach Williams was looking for an assistant coach with a particular set of qualities, and Coach Ranson fit those qualities. “First thing you look for is loyalty. Coach Ranson grew up in the state of Maryland, in Baltimore, and has always been a big Maryland fan,” said Coach Williams.

He also added, “I have watched him as he has coached. He has done a great job wherever he’s been. He brings his own philosophy to the program, and he’s proven to be an outstanding recruiter. He is also an outstanding basketball coach.”

It is clear that Coach Ranson is known around the college ranks as a good recruiter, but he has also been recognized for his player development skills, which is very important to Coach Williams. “ I think it is very good for coaches to develop players. Bino has a good track record of that,” stated Maryland’s head coach.

Williams continued to say, “There is not a particular position. I think there are certain things players must do on the floor and I think he is certainly capable developing players in those areas. I think he can be very successful here.
