Head Coach Erik Bakich relied on Kolarek to inject a blue-collar mentality into the Terrapin program. The Mets staff obviously took notice by selecting Kolarek on the second day of the draft. It did not take long for Kolarek to start his professional career as he signed his contract twelve days after he was drafted. Once the business aspect was taken care of Kolarek was assigned to the Kingsport Mets and quickly advanced to the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, the New York Mets Class-A Short Season team
Since moving to the Cyclones on July 8th, Kolarek has appeared in three games. He has allowed two runs on three hits, striking out eight, and walking only one batter over 4 2/3 innings. Hitters are struggling, as they have only been able to manage a .188 batting average against the 21 year-old left-hander.
Kolareks teammate, Dan Gentzler, is also finding success in his short pro career. Gentzler is currently playing for the Detroit Tigers rookie team in the Golf Coast League, which plays its games in the state of Florida. He has appeared in seven games as a reliever, and performed well. The 22 year-old has pitched 11 2/3 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits and walking only two batters.
Gentzler is one of the team leaders in ground ball to fly ball ratio at 3.17 and holds (which is when a relief pitcher enters a game in a save situation, records at least one out and leaves the game without losing the lead) at 2. These two stats demonstrate that Gentzler is succeeding at keeping the ball in the yard and protecting a lead.
Both of these former Terps are adjusting to the professional ranks, while representing the University of Marylands baseball program, very well. Hopefully one day Kolarek and Gentzler will be able to face each other at the Major League level in the not to distant future.
Also to note that four members of the Terps 2010 recruiting class signed professional contracts this summer as well. They are listed below with their statistics as of July 21, 2010.
