Gross Commits to Memphis

University of Memphis coach Larry Porter needed a defining moment as a recruiter. On Tuesday, he just might have gotten it.

Melrose quarterback Will Gross confirmed in a text message to that he had committed to play for the University of Memphis next year.

Gross is U of M coach Larry Porter's third commitment of the 2012 class.

Chris Vernon of the Chris Vernon Show first reported the news.

Gross finished his junior season with 2,333 yards passing, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Gross, rated a 4-star prospect, had offers from Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee among others. Prior to his commitment Tuesday, Gross was thought to be a Kentucky lean.

"Kentucky is probably my leader right now," Gross told Scout just six days ago. "I need to get over there and visit and I will be doing that very soon. I really like Joker Phillips and what he's doing there. They tell me I have a great chance of coming in early and they like what I can do."

Gross is ranked by Scout as the 14th-best quarterback in the 2012 class.
