Tigers ranked in preseason Top 10

If the 2011-12 preseason coaches' poll is any indication, there won't be a sophomore slump from the University of Memphis men's basketball team.

If the 2011-12 preseason coaches' poll is any indication, there won't be a sophomore slump from the University of Memphis men's basketball team.

The Tigers, made up mostly of sophomores, weighed in at No. 9 in the country in the ESPN/USA Today preseason coaches' with 482 points, their highest preseason ranking since 2008-09 when they entered the season at No. 12.

The Tigers were eliminated by Arizona in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. The Wildcats were ranked No. 16 in the preseason poll.

North Carolina sat atop the poll at No. 1, while defending national champion Connecticut was tabbed No. 4.

Several of the Tigers' non-conference opponents were ranked in the Top 25, including Louisville, which was ranked a spot ahead of Memphis at No. 8. The Tigers and Cardinals face off in December for the first time since Louisville left Conference USA for the Big East.

The Tigers kick off their Maui Invitational bid with a first-round game against No. 18 Michigan and, should they advance, would play either Tennessee or No. 6-ranked Duke.

Xavier, which plays at FedExForum in Jan., came in at No. 15.

The Tigers open the regular season Nov. 18 against Belmont at FedExForum.
