Goodwin signs with Memphis

It wouldn't be basketball season without a little late-game drama.

It wouldn't be basketball season without a little late-game drama.

William Goodwin, a 6-foot-8, 240-lbs. forward from Decatur, Ga. who goes by Shaq," signed and faxed a national letter of intent to the University of Memphis on Wednesday, the last day of the early signing period.

Goodwin committed to the Tigers last week, but his mother told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he would wait to sign any papers until the late signing period in April.

"I'm just glad it's over," said Goodwin, who also considered UCLA, Florida, Arizona, and Georgia. "I'm happy to officially be a part of Memphis."

Goodwin joins Oak Hill guard Damien Wilson as the second official member of the Tigers' 2012 recruiting class. He played with Memphis target Jarnell Stokes on the summer circuit on Memphis YOMCA.

Goodwin is ranked the No. 25 player and the No. 5 power forward in 2012 by Scout.

"For us to get a player like Shaq, it just fits with what we're trying to do here," Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. "He's a high-character kid and he'll fit right in."
