Memphis football search: Day One

As we conclude Day One of the Memphis football coaching search, there's plenty of information to digest. TigerAuthority.com brings you the latest intel and news around the search.

*** Memphis announced today that it hired the firm Eastman & Beaudine, an executive branch based out of Plano, Texas. Most recently, Eastman & Beaudine is responsible for the placement of SMU coach June Jones and former Missouri coach Mike Anderson, who is now at Arkansas.

*** Eastman & Beaudine is the same search firm that Ole Miss is using in its search.

*** As Larry Porter was just fired Sunday, the process is still in its infancy stages. Nothing in terms of formal interviews has been scheduled. The ball is in the firm's court as of tonight.

*** Being that it's so early, there aren't many details to give at the present time. The committee will be rather tight-lipped throughout the process. At this time, it‘s unclear which direction the committee will elect to go. The firm will present the candidates, but it‘s ultimately up to the committee to settle on a coach.

*** Speaking of Porter, he will take a few weeks to collect himself before getting back into coaching but he absolutely plans to get back into it as an assistant this season. Tennessee is a real option for Porter in the running backs coach capacity, according to a source.

*** Mark Mangino, the former Kansas coach, could be a real possibility if he chooses to get back into coaching.

*** Vic Koenning, the interm coach at Illinois, is said to be actively pursuing head coaching jobs. It's unlikely he would be retained when the next coach is hired. He could be an option for Memphis.

*** Ron Zook was in Memphis Monday night for a previously scheduled appearance with the Memphis Touchdown Club. According to multiple sources at the event, Zook said he'd love to get back into coaching this year but denied having interest in Memphis.

*** It appears Chad Morris will remain at Clemson unless he's offered a BCS head coaching job.

*** Monitor the Ole Miss coaching search. Its results could have a major impact on the outcome of Memphis'.

*** Tulane is not focusing on Mike Leach, according to several reports. Leach was said to have serious interest in the Green Wave job. That could open the door for Memphis.

*** Cross Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster's name off the list of the next potential coaches.

*** As of yet, there have been no decommitments. Let the process play out. Most commits are understandably rethinking their decisions, and there could be some fallout. But as of today, the seven players Porter landed remain committed to Memphis.
