*** Garrick McGee, once thought to be a candidate for the Memphis job, accepted the head coach position at UAB. I think it's probably one of the better hires UAB could have made.
*** I continue to hear Mark Mangino‘s name. Whether he wants to get back into coaching or not is the question. I was told by someone who's known Mangino for years that he always thought Mangino would accept an assistant coaching job at a BCS program before he took a non-BCS head job. If he swallowed his pride, though, Mangino-to-Memphis could be a viable option, the source said.
*** As far as the process goes, again, the ball is still in the search firm's court. The search committee can do nothing until the firm provides a list. As of Sunday, a list has not provided. Don't fret. Be patient. The process is moving along.
*** I will say there is a groundswell of support for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach and former Memphis offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner. Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians commented publicly on Fichtner's name gaining steam at Memphis.
"I think Randy would be a great college head coach, whether it be Ole Miss or Memphis and would do a fantastic job, as would Kirby," Arians said.
*** Speaking of commenting publicly, don't expect a lot of that from anyone on the search committee. Expectedly so, the members of the committee are going to be tight-lipped so as to respect the process.
*** No interviews have been conducted by Memphis yet.
*** This is purely an educated guess. Nothing more, nothing less. If I had to guess, Memphis will name a coach the week after next, which gives whoever it is enough time to recruit and attempt to keep the class Porter landed in place.
*** One new name to keep an eye on: Tim Beckaman, head coach at Toledo.
