Miami DB picking up interest from Memphis

If his transcript checks out, a Miami Southridge (Fla.) senior defensive back will likely add an offer from the University of Memphis.

If his transcript checks out, Miami Southridge (Fla.) senior defensive back Nequan Phillips will likely add an offer from the University of Memphis.

The Tigers are recruiting the state of Florida heavily for defensive backs, as they're bringing up Plantation (Fla.) defensive back Chris Morley on an official visit next month.

Phillips, who has offers from Bethune-Cookman and FAMU, said he's been keeping in touch with new defensive backs coach Chris Vaughn.

"He said he really likes me," Phillips said. "He said I remind him of the honey badger (LSU‘s Tyrann Mathieu)."

Phillips said he has to retake his ACT entrance exam next month. He's already ahead of the game, however, as he visited Memphis this summer.

"I like the campus and stuff," Phillips said.

Phillips is rated a 2-star CB by Scout.

Asked about what he's looking for in a college, the Miami native's answer was simple: A good education.

"I put my education first in case football doesn't work out," Phillips said. "It doesn't really matter to me outside of that. I just want to play football because that's what I love."
