At 7:13 a.m., Simmons was the first Memphis commitment to send in his paperwork.
"It's awesome. I can't tell you how excited and pumped up I am," said Simmons, rated a 2-star lineman. "It's a huge relief knowing that it's all over with now. It's time to get to work and prepare myself to play for Memphis and do my part for Memphis."
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Simmons joins several other offensive lineman in the 2012 class and said he intends to fight for a spot next season.
"I'm gonna work my tail off to earn that spot," Simmons said. "If it doesn't happen and I redshirt, then I redshirt. But I'm coming in with a mentality to fight for a spot and I wanna play next season."
