They were watching the film of his stud St. Benedict teammate, junior running back Jordan Wilkins, when they were intrigued by one of the guys who blocked for him.
The Memphis coaches were so intrigued that they inquired for Quon's own highlight film. An offer summarily followed, and Quon, a 6-foot-5 offensive lineman, signed with the Tigers last weeked.
Quon also had a partial offer to FCS Austin Peay. He said he was already familiar with the academic side of things at Memphis, as his older brother attends school there, but wanted to learn more about the football program, which he did on an unofficial visit last month.
"It was nice," Quon said, "with all their brand new workout facilities and new locker rooms. I didn't think it was gonna be like that. It surprised me a lot."
At 220 pounds, Quon, who has only played football for two years, is vastly undersized to play on the offensive line at the FBS level. He said he went from 180 pounds to 220 in a year's time, however, and that the Memphis coaches want him to ideally gain 35 or 40 pounds.
"I thought (I'd have to gain) 50 or 60 pounds, but they don't want me to gain too much because they still wanted my speed," Quon said. "About 260 or 265 is where they want me."
Quon is rated a 2-star offensive lineman. Before this season, Quon had played on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles.
Quon, who plays basketball at St. Benedict also, said he'll start making weight after the season ends.
"Last year I was only 185 and I had no problem gaining (40 pounds)," he said. "I think after basketball season, I'll start eating a lot and trying to get up there. I'm just trying to gain as much weight as possible before practice."
