CANDIDATE BIO: Troy Calhoun

The University of Miami is in the middle of a head coaching search and CanesTime.com will bring you a look at some candidates we believe could be on the list. This segment takes a look at Troy Calhoun.

NAME: Troy Calhoun, 44

CURRENT JOB: Head coach at Air Force

CURRENT ESTIMATED SALARY: $835,000

TIES TO UM: none

WHAT MAKES HIM A GOOD CANDIDATE: Calhoun is one of the most well respected young coaches in the game. He has a lot of experience at the pro level -- which includes having been the offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans in 2006. The three years prior to his arrival at Air Force the Falcons won a total of 13 games and didn't qualify for a bowl game. Since his arrival, they've won 33 in four years and will be going to a bowl game for the fourth straight year. This season his Falcons lost to two top 10 opponents -- Oklahoma (by 3) and Utah (by 5) in close games. In 2009, two of his five losses were in overtime and two others were by a touchdown or less. His teams keep getting better every year and they've done well against some of the best teams in college football. His teams get it done on both sides of the football, too. Last season Air Force's defense ranked 11th nationally and this year their offense ranks 25th.

WHY IT MAY BE UNLIKELY: He's never been a head coach of a BCS school. He only has four years of head coaching experience. Despite having coached in the NFL, his Air Force teams run the option offense which probably isn't a good fit at Miami.

BOTTOM LINE: He's coached under numerous quality coaches. He's called plays at the pro level. He took over a struggling Air Force program and has turned them into a proven winner. If he's able to win 8 and 9 wins a year at Air Force, imagine what he could do here with the quality of athletes he'd be getting. He's one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the college game and would be considered an excellent hire for the Canes.
