Cockroft Pitches UM Past Oral Roberts

Starting pitcher J.D. Cockroft led the seventh-ranked Hurricanes to a 8-5 win over Oral Roberts Friday night in front of 1,731 fans at Mark Light Field.

Cockroft pitched a career-high 7.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) and six hits, while striking out a career-high eight. The win was his fifth of the season and improved his career record at Miami to 10-0. George Huguet picked up his fifth save of the season, and the 27th of his career.

"J.D. pitched really well tonight and we jumped out to and early lead," Head Coach Jim Morris said. "We kicked a couple of balls around and let them back in the ball game, which I wasn't too happy about. But we won and I am happy with that."

Oral Roberts starting pitcher Taylor McIntyre suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1. He gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits in 2.2 innings. He came into the game with a 0.70 ERA.

The Hurricanes improve to 24-5 on the season, while ORU falls to 13-12.

UM broke out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on singles from Richard Giannotti and Ryan Braun. Giannotti moved to third on a throwing error on the pitcher and then scored on Braun's single.

The Hurricanes broke the game open in the third inning with six runs on five hits, highlighted by catcher Erick San Pedro's third home run of the season. The home run extended San Pedro's hitting streak to 12 games.

The six-run inning gave UM a 7-1 lead and was the 22nd time this season Miami has scored at least four runs in an inning.

Oral Roberts scored one unearned run in the fourth inning on an error by first baseman Jim Burt. The error allowed David Castillo, who singled to lead off the inning, to score from second base.

Shortstop Grant Plumley got ORU back in the game with a two-run home run to left-center field in the fifth inning. After Gaby Sanchez's second error of the inning allowed Ryan Welborn to reach base, a bloop single from Dennis Bigley allowed him to score to close the UM lead to 7-4.

A leadoff walk to Gaby Sanchez came around to score for the Hurricanes on a RBI ground out by Jim Burt in the fifth inning.

ORU got one run back in the seventh on a RBI single by Castillo, scoring Plumley who doubled to left-center field earlier in the inning.
