UM Knocks Off 4th-Ranked Long Beach St.

Miami turned four double plays and pounded out 12 hits, as the 17th-ranked Hurricanes knocked off fourth-ranked Long Beach State, 6-4, in front of 1,052 fans at Blair Field Thursday night.

Miami improves to 38-13 on the season with its fourth win over a top five team this season. Long Beach State falls to 37-17 on the season.

J.D. Cockroft picked up his 10th win of the season against only two losses, allowing 12 hits and four runs (two earned). Neil Jamison took the loss for the Dirtbags to fall to 5-2 on the season.

Brian Barton paced a 12-hit attack for UM with two doubles and a single, while Danny Figueroa, Jim Burt and Joey Hooft picked up two hits each.

Miami took the lead with four hits off Long Beach State reliever Neil Jamison, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 lead. Adam Ricks highlight the inning with a RBI double with Danny Figueroa and Jim Burt picking up RBI singles. Ryan Braun added an RBI ground out to break Pat Burrell's freshman record for RBIs with 65th of the season.

Danny Figueroa singled to lead off the game after getting a second life on an error by Long Beach State's first baseman Mike Hofius on a dropped fly ball in foul ground. He moved into scoring position with his 35th stolen base of the season and moved to third base as LBSU's catcher Brad Davis threw wildly into center field.

Ryan Braun followed with a one-out sacrifice fly to center field to score Danny Figueroa for this 64th RBI of the season.

Hofius doubled to lead off the second inning and scored on a RBI double from Adam Heether. The Dirtbags took at 2-1 lead on a single by nine-hole hitter Steve Velazco.

Ryan Braun drew a two-out walk and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Jim Burt. Braun stole second base and moved to third base on Davis' second throwing error of the game.

The Hurricanes and Dirtbags will return to the diamond on Friday night at 10:07 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised on College Sports Television, which can be found on Direct TV channel 610.
