Coral Gables Regional Recap - Day 1

The first day of the baseball regional at Coral Gables has been completed. Miami and Florida Atlantic won their games as expected and will face each other on Saturday. Florida will face Bethune-Cookman on Saturday as well. Individual efforts by star players led each team.

During the two games on Friday, big players did step up in the big games. More success from these leaders will be needed in order to win this regional.

Florida Atlantic 4, Florida 3
The first game of the regional featured two teams who finished at opposite ends of their respective conference. Florida Atlantic won the Atlantic Sun regular season title while Florida finished ninth in the SEC. FAU led the entire game but the game wasn't in hand until the final out. Rusty Brown and Jeff Fiorentino homered for the Owls while starting pitcher Danny Core pitched a solid game. Fiorentino's home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference maker. The leadoff hitter for Florida, Brett Dowdy, had a solid day at the plate going 3-5. Florida's top three power hitters, C.J. Smith, Brian Rose and Ben Harrison were handcuffed in the game combining to go 1-11. The Gators did receive a stellar performance from starting pitcher Justin Hoyman who had a complete game giving up just four runs.

Miami 10, Bethune-Cookman 5
The stars definitely shined bright in this game. Freshman sensation for the Hurricanes Ryan Braun had a career-high four hits with a home run and a double. Braun finished the day 4-5 with three RBI's. Jim Burt also had a great day going 3-5 with two doubles erasing the two errors he made. Vince Bongiovanni turned in a good performance on the mound but the bullpen was a bit shaky to say the least. For Bethune-Cookman, it was their team MVP John Gragg who provided the excitement as the starting pitcher and as a hitter. Gragg looked very comfortable on the mound through the first five innings but then proceeded to give up multiple runs in the next three innings. At the plate he went 3-5 with a home run and a stolen base. Juan Figueroa also had a good day at the plate going 3-5 with a home run that sailed onto the top of the parking garage in right field.

Bethune-Cookman will face Florida at noon on Saturday in the elimination game. Mumba Rivera should get the start for Bethune-Cookman and Florida has any number of guys that could start for them. Florida Atlantic will take on Miami in what figures to be a battle of lefties at 3:30. Randy Beam (13-1, 2.50 ERA) should be the starter for FAU and J.D. Cockroft (10-2, 2.40) should be the starter for Miami.
