"I've always been really interested in Miami," Whitfield said. "It's The U. They have a great program and they put a lot of people into the league. I've been there a few times before and really like everything about it."
Whitfield, 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, has learned that his commitment has prevented him from getting some major offers he'd like to have so he's opened things back up a bit.
"I'm opening it up," he said. "I'm just looking to see what's best for me and I'm just enjoying the process."
The Hurricanes have some competition for now the standout receiver from Jones High in Orlando.
With offers from Clemson and West Virginia in addition to the Canes, Whitfield says he's spoken to UM coaches recently.
"I talked to them on Sunday," he said. "I just wanna enjoy the process, see what's out there."
One of the fastest players in the entire 2013 class, Whitfield caught 10 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns in limited action as a junior. He missed a good chunk of the season due to an ankle injury.
