Spring Game Preview: Defense

Miami's spring game is tomorrow so lets take a closer look at the defensive side of the football going into the game.

Miami's first team defense will wear green tomorrow, and they'll be going up against the first team offense. The second units will compete against each other as well.

The Canes went into spring without much depth at the defensive end position and when Shayon Green was lost with an injury the coaches moved Kelvin Cain there. He's held up well and will start opposite Anthony Chickillo tomorrow. The starters inside will be Curtis Porter and Darius Smith, giving Miami their biggest pair of defensive tackles in a long time. Dwayne Hoilett and Rico Williams will be the twos at end, with Luther Robinson and Olsen Pierre the twos at tackle. Jalen Grimble will play with Team Green, which means he'll likely be getting reps with the first unit.

Denzel Perryman will be the starter at middle linebacker. Jimmy Gaines and Gionni Paul wiill be the outside starters. Paul edged out Tyrone Cornileus for a spot on the first team. Eddie Johnson will also play with Team Green and likely see reps with the first unit. The twos are Raphael Kirby, Cornileus, and Josh Witt. Converted safety Thurston Armbrister will also see time at linebacker with the twos.

Thomas Finnie and Ladarius Gunter will be the starters at cornerback. They had stronger springs than returning starter Brandon McGee, who will run with the twos along with Larry Hope. Ray Ray Armstrong will start at one of the safety spots and the roster for tomorrow lists Vaughn Telemaque, A.J. Highsmith and Andreu Swasey as backups on Team Orange so it'll be interesting to see who the other starting safety will be. Kacy Rodgers is also on Team Green and will run with the first unit at times.

Kicker Jake Wieclaw and punter Dalton Botts will also be on Team Green.
