UM Lands QB Commitment

When Brownwood, Texas standout quarterback Kirby Freeman left for the University of Miami summer camp last week, he was obviously excited. "My biggest goal going into the camp was to impress the coaches enough to the point where they wanted to offer me a scholarship," Freeman said. "I had a great time and did really well."

Freeman said the conditions at the camp were a little bothersome due to all the rain.

"It's rainy season in Florida and so it rained every day of the camp," he said. "It didn't exactly give me a chance to perform my best but I did the best I could and obviously the coaches felt it was good enough."

Upon returning home on Monday, Freeman decided to give the UM coaches a call.

"I called them when I got home and they said they were offering me a scholarship," he said. "I was so happy because that's the offer I always wanted. I took a day to talk it over with my folks and my girlfriend and I came to a decision. I called them back yesterday and made a commitment."

Freeman said he was happy to hear the coaches so excited when he committed.

"They were real excited," he said. "I was real excited, everyone was. It's just a great situation. Coach Werner said he's going to call the other quarterbacks they've offered and tell them they have gotten a quarterback for the Class of 2004 already. To be the only quarterback in the entire nation to be going to Miami is a really special thing."

The talented quarterback, who will graduate in December and start at UM on Jan. 22, said he's excited to get an opportunity to compete with Kyle Wright.

"Kyle's a great quarterback," he said. "He's a great player and I'm looking forward to competing with him. The transfer they got from Florida [Brock Berlin] will likely start the next two seasons so after that I'll have a chance to compete with Kyle and the other guy [Marc Guillon] for the starting spot. We [along with Wright] both perform better under the gun so this competition will be awesome for both of us. I'm really looking forward to it."

Freeman, who plans on attending the Elite 11 Camp later this summer, said he's willing to help UM lure in other top recruits now.

"The coaches told me that anytime they can get a good Texas player they're happy," he said. "Since I'm out here and they're recruiting some of the top guys, I'd be very interested in helping them realize what a great program Miami is."
