Spring Review -- Defensive End

Spring football is over and the Hurricanes are now going into Phase Three, which is summer conditioning. Lets review the defensive end play from the spring and what lies ahead.

The Players:
Anthony Chickillo was the only returning starter of the group going into spring. He had a very productive spring and is one of Miami's best players, regardless of position. The hope is that the sophomore will step up and take a big leadership role on the team this fall. The starter going into the spring opposite Chick was junior Shayon Green. He was having a solid spring until an injury ended it early. He is expected back in the fall and is currently listed as the starter going into the summer. He's been a career backup with zero career sacks but is athletic and a high motor guy.

The backups leaving spring were redshirt freshman Rico Williams, true freshman Dwayne Hoilett, and junior Kelvin Cain. Williams redshirted to add weight and strength last season but didn't show much potential as a pass rusher this spring. Hoilett is very athletic and active and should play a role. Cain was an interesting development. He came here as a linebacker but was moved down after Green got hurt. He played very well at times and ended spring on a good enough note that the coaches are keeping him there heading into the summer.

Best Guess Depth Chart:
Chickillo and Green are the starters going into the summer with Cain and the two freshmen behind them.

What's Ahead:
Chickillo should be one of the best defensive ends in the ACC this fall and should be one of Miami's best players. Hopefully Green develops into a legit starter on the other side. Cain could become a real force as an edge pass rusher. Williams is probably still a year away. Hoilett can be a situational pass rusher because of his speed and quickness off the edge. The depth here isn't real good but help is on the way and in a big way. The Hurricanes will welcome three new players in the summer -- Tyriq McCord, Jelani Hamilton, and Jake O'Donnell. McCord is a tremendously talented pass rusher who will likely see time right away. Hamilton has the total package and should compete for playing time right away. O'Donnell could be a good redshirt candidate but has an ideal combination of size and speed that could get him some reps.
