Scout Ranking: 3-star and No. 117 WR
Measurables: 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds with 4.3 speed (he's the fastest player in the state in track right now)
2011 Stats: The talented wide receiver prospect finished his junior season with 10 catches for 226 yards and four touchdowns, despite missing several games due to an ankle injury.
What they're saying: "He can flat out fly. He doesn't have great ball skills and isn't going to catch much in traffic but his speed is game-changing." -- Mike Bakas/Scout.com
Recruiting Status: He committed to the Hurricanes after being offered last May. He backed off that commitment recently and now says he's strongly considering other offers like West Virginia and Clemson.
What he's saying about Miami: "I chose Miami because of their history and I've always been a fan of that school and program," he said. "They're having a tough time lately but they'll get it going under Al Golden. They're gonna have a good recruiting class."
Miami angle: The Canes want to upgrade their overall team speed on offense and Whitfield would definitely provide that. He's a big play waiting to happen every time he steps on the field. He grew up a Miami fan, already committed once, and is coached by former Hurricane Kenard Lang. The Canes have a lot working for them in their favor if they continue to actively pursue him down the stretch. It seems like he simply wants to take a few visits and enjoy the recruiting process like most kids.
