Fall Camp Preview: Quarterbacks

Fall camp is about to begin for the Hurricanes so lets take a closer look at the team. This piece focuses on the quarterbacks.

Coach: Jedd Fisch (2nd season)

The Players:
Stephen Morris (6-2/215/Jr) ... 108-for-190, 1,523 yards, 7 TD's, 11 INT's, 72 rushing yards, 2 TD's
Ryan Williams (6-5/225/R-So) ... 165-for-290, 2,075 yards, 13 TD's, 10 INT's (at Memphis in 2010)
Gray Crow (6-3/225/Fr)
Preston Dewey (6-2/210/Fr)
David Thompson (6-2/205/Fr)

Top Returner: Morris is the only one of the five with any previous playing experience at Miami. He started a few games when Jacory Harris got hurt in 2010 and then started the opener against Maryland last season when Harris served a one-game suspension.

Top Newcomer: Crow and Dewey both started school a semester early and went through spring practice with the team. It was Crow, a strong-armed gun-slinger from Clearwater, who was the number two quarterback behind Williams at the end of spring football.

Bottom Line: The quarterback competition is wide open heading into fall camp. Both players have the same amount of time in Jedd Fisch's offense and while Williams has more game experience overall at the college level, Morris has more here at Miami. Morris was expected to enter spring as the starter but had surgery and so Williams took the number one job. They will compete over the next few weeks and a starter won't likely be named until late August. The same fierce competition will take place between Crow and Dewey to see who earns the number three spot, and the one who likely won't be redshirted. Thompson is expected to miss his entire freshman season recovering from an injury.
