UM Football: News & Notes (8/10)

A lot is happening in Coral Gables as the Canes continue preparing for the start of the 2012 season. Here are some news and notes from today.

* The Hurricanes held its second two-a-day practice today. They will practice again tomorrow before scrimmaging at 1 pm on Sunday.

* OLB Jimmy Gaines returned to practice today. They will use the next two days to determine whether or not he'll scrimmage on Sunday. It's still a possibility.

* OLB Gionni Paul has been ruled out for Sunday's scrimmage with an injury. Golden says he is expected to return to practice on Tuesday.

* Denzel Perryman is one of the leaders on defense and has drawn high praise from his coaches. "Denzel's camp is nothing short of phenomenal," Golden said. "He's doing an unbelievable job."

* Regarding the top four defensive tackles that Mark D'Onofrio mentioned yesterday, Golden says they need to start making more plays. "We need guys to start making plays instead of just taking up space," he said, referring to the top group of Curtis Porter, Darius Smith, Luther Robinson, and Olsen Pierre.

* OT Seantrel Henderson is still not practicing due to a medical issue. "Seantrel is day-to-day," Golden said.

* RS freshman Matt Goudis is having a good camp and has been working as both a kicker and a punter. He's providing good competition for Jake Wieclaw and Dalton Botts.
