UM Football Scoop: 8/17

A lot is happening in Coral Gables as the Canes continue preparing for the start of the 2012 season. Here are some news and notes from today.

* Al Golden says the interior of the defense is stronger than it was last season. However, they don't have the same experience on the outside.

* Golden singled out Denzel Perryman and how his move to the middle back in the spring has been very successful. "He had his best practice yesterday," Golden said. Now, Eddie Johnson, Gionni Paul, and Thurston Armbrister "need to step up."

* Anthony Chickillo returned to practice today, after being limited the last couple days with a stomach fly. Golden says they want Chickillo to become one of the team leaders this season and make more plays.

* Golden says Antonio Crawford "is doing a tremendous job" at cornerback. He also noted that Rayshawn Jenkins saw time with the first team at the nickel in yesterday's practice.

* Jimmy Gaines is back practicing but isn't fully healthy and Golden says that's a priority for them right now.

* Tomorrow's scrimmage will be more like a real game situation, compared to last week's which focused on a lot of situational stuff (like goal line work). Substitution patterns, sideline control, and things like that will be worked on tomorrow.
