UM Football: News & Notes (8/21)

A lot is happening in Coral Gables as the Canes continue preparing for the start of the 2012 season. Here are some news and notes from today.

* Today is the final two-a-day session of fall camp. They will practice again this afternoon and then again tomorrow. That's when fall camp ends. After a day off, they'll begin preparing for Boston College.

* The starting lineup may still change between now and the Boston College game, even though Al Golden says yesterday may be the last release of a depth chart until then.

* LT Malcolm Bunche is the strongest player on the team and is doing well. "He does a great job on his assignments. We just need consistency from him."

* Dalton Botts is having a tremendous camp and is much better than this time last season. "He's playing much better. If you want a good defense, have a great punter."

* Curtis Porter is out right now. "It's day-to-day right now. He's got a health issue that isn't football-related."

* The coaching staff feels a lot more comfortable with each other this year. "The communication is better. The continuity is better."

* This team is more mature and has more desire than last year's group, even though they lack age and experience.

* Gray Crow started fall camp ahead of Preston Dewey for the 3rd quarterback spot but Dewey has changed that lately. Ideally, one of them will redshirt. "We definitely need some separation there."

* Olsen Pierre is the team's top defensive tackle right now. "He has long arms. He's athletic. He's very flexible. We need him to put it all together. He has to become more of a playmaker."
