UM Football Scoop: 8/28

A lot is happening in Coral Gables as the Canes continue preparing for the start of the 2012 season. Here are some news and notes from today.

* When asked to describe Boston College, head coach Al Golden talked about how they have 41 returning lettermen, most of their starters coming back, and that quarterback Chase Rettig "is a big time player."

* The recent storm in South Florida, which forced the school to close down, did not affect the team's preparation. They simply changed some practice times around to get everything in.

* The latest depth chart that has "OR" listed at certain positions indicates that both players will have a chance to play a lot. "The one who practices better will start and the one who plays better in the game will finish," Golden said as a way to view that.

* Due to the high temperatures expected on the turf Saturday, Golden said a lot of players will play. "We'll use three or four tight ends and three or four running backs."

* Golden said one of the players he's most excited to see play is quarterback Stephen Morris. Back in the spring, Golden was impressed by how Morris was willing to coach the younger players, learn the offense, and study his playbook when a lot of injured quarterbacks would simply want to keep throwing.

* Freshman linebacker Rapheal Kirby had his cast removed today. He will not travel this weekend and his injury will be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks.

* Right tackle Seantrel Henderson is back in action but will not travel because of such limited practice time. The backup to starting right tackle is Ereck Flowers is Jermaine Johnson.

* Defensive tackle Curtis Porter, who's been out of action lately, will not travel.

* The coaches never talked about Flowers as a true freshman throughout fall camp for a few reasons. One is how well Brandon Linder helped him along on the mental side of the game.

* Freshman running back Duke Johnson will get touches Saturday but "won't carry the same load as Mike James or Eduardo. We want to see how he responds to college football."

* Golden expects 15 true freshmen to play on Saturday.

* The team will travel with three quarterbacks and as of today, Preston Dewey is ahead of Gray Crow for the third spot behind Morris and Ryan Williams.
