Grading the Canes: Game 1 (defense)

The Hurricanes defeated Boston College by the score of 41-32 on Saturday. Lets take a closer look at how the defense performed.

Defensive End: D
Boston College threw the ball 51 times on Saturday and the front four was unable to generate any pressure. The Canes played five players here. Shayon Green, with seven tackles and 0.5 for loss, was the most active. Anthony Chickillo recovered a fumble inside the 10-yard line. Kelvin Cain and Tyriq McCord each made plays as well. The lack of a pass rush was a concern though, especially considering how many yards BC threw for.

Defensive Tackle: C
The Hurricanes used five players here and they all combined to slow the BC running game down. The Eagles like to run right at you and this group held up pretty well against the run. The BC running backs averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. Olsen Pierre had a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and broke up a pass. Luther Robinson caused a fumble behind the line of scrimmage that set up a Miami field goal. Jalen Grimble and Darius Smith also made plays. Still, they made just one play behind the line of scrimmage and weren't able to generate any type of pass rush.

Linebacker: C
The two BC running backs carried the ball 28 times and Miami's linebackers made tackles on 12 of those plays. The average yards gained on those plays was just 2.0. Denzel Perryman (0, 2, 1) made a key stop on third down and also picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Eddie Johnson (-1, 5) had a tackle for loss and caused a fumble. Ramon Buchanan (-3, 1) had a TFL. Jimmy Gaines (5, 2, 2) was active when he was on the field. Thurston Armbrister (10) was very inactive in the running game. Jawand Blue (0) was credited for the tackle when BC failed to convert a fourth-and-goal situation late in the game. This group was solid against the run. They really struggled against the pass, however. The BC running backs caught 13 passes for 204 yards and one score. The tight ends grabbed four passes for 45 yards.

Cornerback: C
BC threw the ball 51 times and their wide receivers caught 18 of those, but only for 192 yards. They struggled to contain receiver Alex Amidon, who caught 10 passes for 149 yards on the afternoon. Brandon McGee provided some run support. Ladarius Gunter recovered a fumble and returned it for a lot of yards.

Safety: B-
Kacy Rodgers and Vaughn Telemaque started the game and they did a ice job of not getting beat up. BC's longest passing play down the field went for just 32 yards. Rodgers was involved in six tackles on defense -- three in the running game (8, 5, 0) and three in coverage. All but one of Telemaque's five tackles came while in coverage. Deon Bush played quite a bit and made three stops in coverage as well. They tackled pretty well and prevented the big play for the most part.
